Open Forum with Astronaut Lt. Colonel Ronald Garan, Jr. The Rensselaer Astrophysical Society was honored to host Lt. Colonel Ronald Garan, Jr., a pilot astronaut slated for the next shuttle mission. Mr. Garan answered questions and met with the community on Thursday, October 10, 2002 in an open forum, then toured the Rensselaer campus with the RAS officers and invited guests. Lieutenant Colonel Ron Garan (USAF) is a New Yorker, born in Yonkers, and educated at Roosevelt High School in Yonkers and at SUNY College in Oneonta. He subsequently earned several Master Degrees in Aeronautical Sciences and engineering out of state. From his New York beginnings, LTC Garan has risen to the top of the aerospace field. He began his career as a fighter pilot and is a decorated Desert Storm veteran. He is the recipient of numerous decorations and awards from the Air Force. LTC Garan is a graduate of the US Naval Test Pilot School and was selected for astronaut training in 2000. He was featured in an article in the July 8 edition of Aviation Week and Space Technology Magazine, which described in detail astronaut training for space shuttle landings. Lt.
